This is probably old news to many, but I have been looking at Theo Jansen's kinetic art walkers. I think using solar stiring engines to drive it would be fun. The geometry has already been figured out. There is a small kit that is sold that you see in the 1st video. He calls it a strandbeest ....dutch for beach animal.
http://www.mekanizmalar.com/theo_jansen.html ---this is java applet showing the mechanism in action.
http://www.strandbeest.com/beests_leg.php ---the 11 magic numbers. (m= crankshaft stroke, A=central pivot support, L=crankshaft center)
http://crabfuartworks.blogspot.com/2011 ... alker.html -- hamster powered strandbeest

do a search on youtube using "strandbeest" as a keyword.

Fun stuff.

Don't know if this counts, but most of my hot air engines can do something, one has a water pump, used for pumping water from one place to another, cooling the motor on the way. That motor also runs a small generator. Tthre larger motors run generators, one uses the power from this to run a cooling fan on the radiator, these motors can drive a small power hacksaw with a junior hacksaw bladein it. Even my smallest one with a 5/8" bore will run a generator to power a 3V radio. The free piston motor has its own linear alternator as a load. My newest motor is in a boat. There are two stove top fan motors. Ian S C
