Air is a spring. Any space (air), what we does not use (heating- cooling) or intentionally as a spring (on good frequency) it worsens the efficiency. Like when you're trying to ride a bike but springs are under your feet.

Thanks for sharing. The Stirling free-piston system has many attractive attributes. Specifically, the Stirling cycle is the most efficient thermodynamic heat engine cycle that exists. concepts considered for SP-100 selection, the Stirling cycle has the highest efficiency for the same given heat input and heat rejection temperatures. Stirling system employs the gas bearing - either hydrodynamic of hydrostatic - there is the potential for long life and high reliability.
