Alpha Stirling engine B-20 (Ross)

Hi,

This very moment I'm busy redrawing Andy Ross's B-20 engine.
Has someone built this engine before...? I have some important questions.
To be clear, I'm not redrawing, just converting Imperial to metric, almost finished.
I have to change the main body because I have no casting and I suppose there is no more available. So I will make it out of barstock.

From what I read this engines has a 30+ watts output, very impressive...!

Hi,

Just finished Ross's B-20 engine drawings.
This is a small movie of it. To have a clear view I did not assembled some parts(panels). I also used some transparent parts(cilinders) to have it all very clear.

Thanks for the vidio Chris, Looks nicer than my model, made of ply wood that I made to visulize the action of the motor. The only thing I did different was turn the triangle up the other way to raise the crank, it makes no difference to the running of the motor, but makes it a little more compact. One thing I must try, is to remove the side arm, and replace it with a pin on the triangle, centered at the anchor point for the side arm, and slot mounted on the bottom of the crankcase. This would eliminate the slight arc that is induced in the triangle. Ian S C

Another thing with having the apex of the triangle pointing up is that the con rods are longer, my geometry is a bit rusty, if say the con rods are double the length, does that reduce the all ready small angle by half? Ian S C

Ian,

I don't think, in the case of Andy Ross's B-20, there is need to extend the conrods.
Look at the movie and you'll see there is only a rather small angle-movements of the conrods.

I know, I was just museing. Andy uses very narrow pistons, and fixed rod on some of his engines, and allows the pistons to wobble a little. Ian S C

Hi,

Did'nt thought of it myself to use a yoke device. I could have integrated it in my owne engine.
It' ll be the first time I use such a yoke device. Looks great and seems logic to.
