Gamma Stirling Engine does not working, may be fly wheel problem
Gamma Stirling Engine does not working, may be fly wheel problem
Please any one suggest me that how to calculate the weight of fly wheel ,
My flywheel gives only 1 rev. Is it enough or not?
How many revolutions may the engine have minimum required to start.
Also give me the suggestion about the minimum weight of flywheel.
I have the fly wheel of weight 1.3 Kg , Dia 5.5 inches.

Re: Gamma Stirling Engine does not working, may be fly wheel problem
Your flywheel looks about the right size to me (sewing machine? That's what my second motor had at first).
What is the bore and stroke of both the power piston, and the displacer. They should have a ratio of 1 : 1.5, I think you have the cranks at 90*. Maybe the displacer is rubbing on the hot cap, I tend to use a stainless cylinder type, I tried one like yours with little success.

Thanks Ian SC
dear Ian SC tell me about what positions is required for piston and displacer when start the engine and also tell me when I placed piston at top dead center it creates pressure during rotating the flywheel so what minimum pressure is required.

Re: Gamma Stirling Engine does not working, may be fly wheel problem
With the power piston at TDC, the displacer is halfway, the cranks are at approximately 90* to each other, the displacer leading.

Ian SC I modified my engine flywheel in which I increase weight at its circumference you can see in pics. After that this modified flywheel make four revolution when I rotate by hand. So tell me this flywheel is ok or not.
Ian SC a question with you that what kind of heating source that i use to run it and also tell me what minimum temperature is required to run the engine smoothly.

Re: Gamma Stirling Engine does not working, may be fly wheel problem
It should run on a spirit lamp, or a small LPG gas burner.

thanks a lot Ian SC
Ian SC when starting the engine how much time required to heat the hot side of engine to produce enough pressure inside the engine. Can you suggest me that I install a pressure guage at the back side of plates to check the inside pressure if ok so what capacity of pressure guage is suitable for my engine.

Re: Gamma Stirling Engine does not working, may be fly wheel problem
The starting time varies from engine to engine, it mainly depends on what metal the hot cap is made of, and how thick it is, and of course the heat source. Forget the pressure gauge, the maximum pressure could go up to nearly 30 psi, double atmospheric pressure, but the pressure on the gauge would go from 0 to 30 each stroke of the engine ie it would be another power outlet in it's self.

Ian SC I had seen in stirling engine sites in which some people use counter weight clamp on flywheel 90degree leading to the displacer pin and other doesn't use the counter weight but both engines are working. so Ian SC suggest me that I use counter weight on my engine or not. plz check the attached image in which piston pin, displacer pin and counter weight displacements are ok.

Re: Gamma Stirling Engine does not working, may be fly wheel problem
If I were to use a counter weight, I would drop it down 45*(in your drawing) to try and balance both the power piston, and the displacer. My low temp motor has a bit of electricians solder wire stuck on with Bluetac. The balance is important with LTD motors, because they have that little in the way of power that it can mean the difference between going and not going.

Ian SC there is a video of my stirling engine second trial, plz observe the whole video and suggest me the solution why it is not running, currently I think after this trial that there is a over dead volume in my stirling engine design. I attached a assembly photo of my stirling engine you can seen in photo in which a air passage way plate that contain a slot for passage of air form piston cylinder to displacer cylinder. so this slot make over dead volume inside the engine that make lose the expansion pressure and doesn't properly push the piston to rotate the flywheel. so Ian SC tell me my guess is right or wrong ?
thanks

Re: Gamma Stirling Engine does not working, may be fly wheel problem
(1) Check for leaks. (2) Reduce friction. (3) Check that the crank pins are at 90 degrees to each other. (4) If you are worried about the dead space, pack it lightly with either a steel wool pot scourer, or fine stainless steel gauze mesh, this will also act as a regenerator. (5) use the cooling system. (6) Make sure you are turning the flywheel in the right direction(sounds silly).
You have my sympathy about the sore wrist, at times I'v flicked the flywheel for what seems hours, given up and come back in a day or so, given it a flick and away it goes.
