That depends.

Like most other things, the more you know the less you pay. Given you have to ask the question, you couldn't afford it.

How much are the hosting fees? Give a ball park. And you are correct, if more than $5 I'm not interested. But you want someone else to do all the work and pay so you can waste people's time reading your soapboxing. Right?

Speculative ideas are only innovative if operational, and working. They aren't even theories if based on fraudulent reports. Guessing doesn't count. You could call a nonfunctioning guessing section "wild ass guessing". That would at least allow all kinds of free heat engine speech.

I thought it kindly could have been called speculative ideas. You have the right to call it innovative and theories, but then you should limit it to valid workable science based theories. Allowing wild baseless speculation to be called innovative is misleading.

Calling it obsolete theory is as misleading as calling F=Ma obsolete. It is a current, taught, and used often, theory. Regardless of your dark opinion.

There is always the 'other' section, or 'trash' section. You could be astronomical and call a section 'black hole'.

I wasn't kissing up, obviously, I was being polite in regards to your internet location. I know you don't care, I was being polite.

I'm not here to be a problem. I'm here to point out where problems are. You just disagree that they are problems.

Here I care. Your own website not. It will probably end up with a bunch of speculation about things that were proven wrong 150 years ago. Especially if you continue bashing modern thermodynamics. The last 200+ years is all part of modern thermodynamics. Some is used to point out bad ideas, like Caloric theory, and why it is baseless.

I've been debating with myself how to set up the "introductions" area/page-whatever.

One thing that I found awkward about that page here is that a new member writes a long introduction telling all about their projects, hopes, dreams, ambitions etc

Then, crickets.

They are, infact compelled to post (within 3 days as an anti-spam measure) but get no response, there is no hello, no welcome, no opportunity for conversation.

So, I see a new member post and want to respond... Very interesting... Or whatever, start a conversation, but, the obscure location and format are not conducive to any continuing exchange of dialogue with a member.

So...

Maybe new members could just post their introduction as a "New Topic". Then others could post their welcome messages, ask questions and have an actual get to know you kind of conversation.

So no space limitations or crowding out other's introductions, no getting lost or buried, so it's not just an obligatory post to keep from getting banned.

Not that I want to be critical of this forum. I love this forum and have very much appreciated Darryl Boyd's generosity in keeping it going for over a decade, never asking for anything and never monetizing, no advertising, because he said this forum was special to him.

Still, if we are going to remake a new forum from the ground up, there is the opportunity to re-think a few things.

Maybe the "introductions" could be a combination introduction/member pages.

I noticed that phpbb has a "pages" plugin. So you can add static web pages to the forum. Not sure what it does exactly but in theory at least, each member could have a kind of personal "blog" and a webpage rather than the somewhat awkward obligatory isolated introductions post and in addition to the limited "profile".

I guess not everyone would have a use for it.

Anyway, for now, if anyone happens over there, an introduction post is not obligatory and would need to be posted as a "New Topic".

People here, I notice over the years, often put a lot of time and heartfelt effort into writing an introduction that is then lost and ignored. Not much of a welcome.

To find a new introduction you have to go there and go all the way to page 53 or whatever. Nobody ever sees it.

Tom, I had set up a test page myself and was thinking about going ahead with it. I too don't have the time to moderate such a thing but would be willing to help. I don't foresee much activity but it would be better than having nothing, or just resorting to youtube.

Separate categories would be great, similar to the stirling engine builders forum.

If you don't mind random advertising, pop-ups, banner ads and what not, and a domain name like "free-forums~..." there are several free forum hosting services that generate their revenue usually by putting ads on your forum.

I'm ok to chip in with some moderating, but I don't have the time or will power to maintain a whole forum.
I've enjoyed this place and it's sad that it's leaving. A replacement would certainly be nice.
