Well, if you look down at the bottom of the page it says: "Powered by phpBB® Forum Software"
Someone just needs to install the forum software on a server somewhere and get a domain set up.
There are a number of other free open source forum programs. Many hosting services have automatic installation.
Nothing much to it really.
This is just an example, it may be a little different in different web hosting services.

It can of course, get more complicated. If, for example, you wanted to host the forum on your own home Linux box or something .

I already have a half dozen websites, have run my own web server and email servers, set up message boards. I've even written a few basic message board programs. I'm a computer programmer and I specialize in writing message board and other CGI (common gateway interface) Web based programs, so that would not be any problem at all.
Running and moderating a public forum, however is almost a full time commitment, if nothing else, there is all the inevitable spam to block and delete. I have little free time to commit to that, so I would consider running a public forum myself a last resort.

Well, I started things in motion for a new Stirling engine forum.

Personally there are a few things I think could be changed, or changed back or improved.
The search setting that renders almost everything "too common". I found the setting for that and shut it off.
By default, a word is considered "too common" just based on the total for how many times the word appears in the forum. So, if there is a lot of information on a topic it's guaranteed to be "too common", pretty ridiculous.

I've got a bare-bones site setup last night.
One thing I would like to see, personally is some forum categories.
There are some advantages to the uni-forum single forum format, but IMO not enough to outweigh having things a little more compartmented.
Any suggestions for how to organize the site?
One thing I would prefer is a separate forum section for actual build projects and another area for debate about theory.
IMO people who just want to share their progress on a build project should not have to endure being constantly pummeled by criticism from opinionated members with a different theory.
On the other hand, I think theoretical debate has its value, in its proper place, but I don't think "Trolling" someone's build project with hostile remarks about why it could never work need to be tolerated where someone is just trying to document their work.
There is a point where friendly suggestions or advise from a "more knowledgeable" member can become abusive. So what if so-and-so thinks it could never work? Sometimes it is fun and educational to try anyway, just to see what happens.

IMO people come to this forum to have fun. Not endure boring lectures on the second law of thermodynamics, but, there could be a section on theory for people interested in that sort of thing.
Maybe some subheadings: "Fools boring lectures on the second law of thermodynamic" and "fools boring lectures on the Carnot efficiency limit".

Here, I was protecting the website. At your site I wouldn't care. Get yourself into trouble, no skin off my nose. That is why I would stay far away. Good luck, though, promoting your mistakes. Maybe someone else will come to your rescue, or you'll do some of the recommended experiments and data collecting.

Some good suggestions. Too bad you won't be joining, if it ever actually gets going. Personally I'd rather someone show up to moderate this forum and clean up the spam and maybe pay the hosting fee, or maybe Jack will set up a forum.
