Domain expiration

Post by Tom Booth »

Checking the Whois data for this forum it is set to expire January 1st 2025, less than two months away.

Would anyone here be interested in starting a backup forum?

What would that entail exactly?

Well, if you look down at the bottom of the page it says: "Powered by phpBB® Forum Software"

Someone just needs to install the forum software on a server somewhere and get a domain set up.

There are a number of other free open source forum programs. Many hosting services have automatic installation.

Nothing much to it really.

This is just an example, it may be a little different in different web hosting services.

It can of course, get more complicated. If, for example, you wanted to host the forum on your own home Linux box or something .

Tommy, there is no way that I would enable your lies, quackery, immaturity, ignorance, narcissism, cursing, vituperation, caustic demeanor, and misleading depiction of valid science. Your are lucky to have found a webmaster that was just as ignorant, or on the same agenda as you. As many posters as you have driven away from this site, I doubt you would last long anywhere else.

I would ban you in a heartbeat for abuse of the privilege.

Your knowledge of science is completely wrong. I'm sorry that you are so arrogant that you think you can baffle someone into paying their own money into promoting your psychosis.

If this website vanishes on the first of 2025, it will be a well deserved goodbye. No more reading your lies and feeling compelled to put forth a real scientific viewpoint.

Start your own website. No I won't be joining. Anyone stupid enough to join you will deserve what they get. I only joined here in sympathy of the owner. Sorry he was baffled by you right up to the end. Anyone enabling you deserves what they get.

https://www.stirlingengine.com/forums/

No I'm not going to join that one either. But it was apparently moderated much more scientifically. Yes, Tommy I know you already have posted there. I don't know if it is still operational, or even moderated. The last post, yours, was in 2022.

What a whiner!

I will be sorry to lose contact with the other posters here. Good life to all. Good life to tommy too, but, hopefully far away from me.

I already have a half dozen websites, have run my own web server and email servers, set up message boards. I've even written a few basic message board programs. I'm a computer programmer and I specialize in writing message board and other CGI (common gateway interface) Web based programs, so that would not be any problem at all.

Running and moderating a public forum, however is almost a full time commitment, if nothing else, there is all the inevitable spam to block and delete. I have little free time to commit to that, so I would consider running a public forum myself a last resort.

Well, I started things in motion for a new Stirling engine forum.

Any special feature requests?

Personally there are a few things I think could be changed, or changed back or improved.

The search setting that renders almost everything "too common". I found the setting for that and shut it off.

By default, a word is considered "too common" just based on the total for how many times the word appears in the forum. So, if there is a lot of information on a topic it's guaranteed to be "too common", pretty ridiculous.

Excellent. Please moderate it for just verifiable science. Good luck.

I've got a bare-bones site setup last night.

One thing I would like to see, personally is some forum categories.

There are some advantages to the uni-forum single forum format, but IMO not enough to outweigh having things a little more compartmented.

Any suggestions for how to organize the site?

One thing I would prefer is a separate forum section for actual build projects and another area for debate about theory.

IMO people who just want to share their progress on a build project should not have to endure being constantly pummeled by criticism from opinionated members with a different theory.

On the other hand, I think theoretical debate has its value, in its proper place, but I don't think "Trolling" someone's build project with hostile remarks about why it could never work need to be tolerated where someone is just trying to document their work.

There is a point where friendly suggestions or advise from a "more knowledgeable" member can become abusive. So what if so-and-so thinks it could never work? Sometimes it is fun and educational to try anyway, just to see what happens.

IMO people come to this forum to have fun. Not endure boring lectures on the second law of thermodynamics, but, there could be a section on theory for people interested in that sort of thing.

Maybe some subheadings: "Fools boring lectures on the second law of thermodynamic" and "fools boring lectures on the Carnot efficiency limit".

Oh, well, nevermind, I forgot:

Sometimes what appears to be abuse is actually correct and helpful.

Having categories might help. Banning people for a difference of opinion is bad form and bad for the forum. It drives away those that really have expertise, and encourages those with arrogance and no clue, to join just because they believe the quackery. Encouragement can be bad, it's not all good. Encouraging learning is good.

Category suggestions along with those you've already stated.

Valid project builds. Like the 55 gallon drum builds.

Exploratory project builds. Like the putting two engines together cold plate to cold plate, and the butane refrigerator, builds.

Free energy discussions.

Free energy builds.

Historic Stirling. Talk about how successful engines in the past were built, and operate, and analyzed. Like the Essex discussion and others.

Thermodynamic theory, classical.

Thermodynamic theory speculative. Tom's theories.

Speculative theory. Like mile high Hg column.

Help section. Encourage people to learn.

Rules of thumb for building from scratch. Displacer to power, cylinder volume ratio.

Sorry, I got carried away with the wish list. LOL. Brainstorming.

You'd just ban me anyway. You have the right to do so, but it would be a mistake to not have my input occasionally.

Here, I was protecting the website. At your site I wouldn't care. Get yourself into trouble, no skin off my nose. That is why I would stay far away. Good luck, though, promoting your mistakes. Maybe someone else will come to your rescue, or you'll do some of the recommended experiments and data collecting.

IOW, I'm not a problem, you are. Good luck. Cary on. I wish you well and far away from me.

Some good suggestions. Too bad you won't be joining, if it ever actually gets going. Personally I'd rather someone show up to moderate this forum and clean up the spam and maybe pay the hosting fee, or maybe Jack will set up a forum. I don't really need the headaches.

Anyway a few name changes:

"Thermodynamic theory, classical" might be more appropriately named "Obsolete theory"

"Speculative theory" could be "Innovative ideas"

Etc.

And please stop trying to kiss up to me via PM. Given your earlier disparaging comments about this site and it's owner don't expect any tolerance from me for allowing the continuation of you BS on any new forum I have anything to do with
