Stirling engines with an internal spring question

For displacers, I try to get somewhere about .010" to .015" thick,

will it still work almost as good if the 304 stainless tube is 1 or 2mm thick?

Yes it will work, but anything over 1 mm is getting a bit heavy, the 2 mm thickness could be reduced by fitting it on a mandrel, and reducing the thickness by turning it in the lathe, you might have trouble with the welded seam, this is sometimes a bit hard.
