The best that I can think of is pallet wood burnt to charcoal. I only realised recently that pallets, according to ISPM15, have to be treated with something to prevent forest bugs spreading, and the only somethings that are authorised are heat treatment, and methyl bromide, which is being phased out...

It might be a good idea to tread carefully before staking too much effort on Brown's gas- my own sceptical opinion is that it's fringe science. Woodgas isn't necessarily dirty- it's just that the creativity in the woodgas forums is about cracking the wood tars to CO and H2 for whatever feedstock is ...
